Job Description

Are you passionate about biodiversity and the environment? Do you want to make a positive impact on the sustainability goals of the United Nations? The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are seeking an Event Leader for the City Nature Challenge 2024!

Event Details:

Event Name: City Nature Challenge 2024 – Saskatoon and area (CNC YXE 2024)
Dates: April 26 to April 29, 2024 (Observation Stage) & April 30 to May 5, 2024 (Identification Stage)
Results Unveiling: Monday, May 6, 2024
Location: Various natural areas, bus stops, lawns, yards across Saskatoon, including events hosted at George Genereux Urban Regional Park, Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

Role of Event Leader:
As an Event Leader, you will be the driving force behind an event(s) engaging the community in this exciting biodiversity challenge. Your responsibilities include organizing and leading event(s) between Friday, April 26, and Monday, April 29. Flexibility: Events can be scheduled outside of regular 9-5 work hours to accommodate the general public, while daytime hours are ideal for leading events with student participation. Events documenting biodiversity and organisms are generally 2 1/2 to 3 hours in length.

How to Get Involved:
If you are available and excited about promoting biodiversity through one or multiple BioBlitz type of event(s), we want to hear from you!

What the Challenge Involves:

Snap pictures of wild plants, animals, insects, and mushrooms from April 26 to April 29, 2024 in Saskatoon and Area.
Identify the discovered species from April 30 to May 5, 2024, using iNaturalist.
Results will be unveiled on Monday, May 6, 2024.
It’s a nature observation showdown! Cities compete in a bioblitz-style challenge to make the most nature observations, discover diverse species, and engage the most people.

Check out our tutorial “What is it?” on finding biodiversity—it’s easy, enjoyable, and suitable for everyone, from seasoned naturalists to those who simply enjoy strolling outdoors. At events, encourage event participants to capture images of organisms or sound recordings with smartphone and share observations through iNaturalist

Application Requirements:

To be considered for the Event Leader role, please submit the following:

Resume or CV: Highlighting relevant educational background, work experience, or volunteer experience.

Cover Letter: Expressing your passion for biodiversity, your connection to the community, and why you’re excited about leading event(s) for the City Nature Challenge

Availability: Provide your availability between April 26 and April 29, 2024, to organize and lead event(s) at the 148 acre mixed forest at George Genereux Urban Regional Park or the 326 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area with 166.8 acres of grasslands, 144 acres of mixed woodlands, and 18.5 acres of wetlands.

Skills Required Certification and Education Requirements: The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas welcome individuals from various backgrounds to lead our City Nature Challenge 2024 events. While formal certification is not mandatory, an ideal candidate would possess one or more of the following qualifications: Environmental Science Enthusiast: A strong interest or background in environmental science, biodiversity, or related fields. Educator in Natural Sciences: Current or former science teachers, environmental educators, or professionals with a passion for educating others about nature. Biologist or Ecologist: Individuals with a degree or experience in biology, ecology, or a related field will find their expertise invaluable. Community Engagement Specialists: Those skilled in community outreach, event planning, or volunteer coordination who are enthusiastic about promoting sustainability goals.
