Position Title | Reading Guide (Spark Program) |
Job Description | Foundations provides one-to-one support to strengthen children’s reading strategies. Reading Guides attend a 3-hour training on reading methods and strategies and will be provided all resources needed. Volunteers are matched with an elementary school student and meet during the day, either in person or on Zoom. The volunteer commitment is twice per week for a minimum of 8 weeks. |
Skills Required | Reading improvement requires naming and practicing the strategies that good readers use, making those invisible competencies visible. Volunteers need to know, name, and model those competencies along with lots of practice. Discussing these criteria with students allows both the volunteer and student to share the same language and goals. This will be discussed during the Spark training session (mandatory for all volunteers). |
Benefits to Volunteer | Be part of a caring and trained volunteer network that helps adults and families with their reading, writing, and other literacy skills. Together we will make a difference! |
