Position Title Reading Tent Volunteer
Job Description

Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.

Currently we are looking for volunteers in Saskatoon to read together with children in our popular Reading Tent program at various outdoor locations in the city. These tents run primarily on weekdays, Tuesday to Thursday, for 2 to 4 hours between 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm in July to August. Volunteers are asked to commit to one 2-4 hour Reading Tent site per week for six weeks.

The purpose of the reading tent program is to provide a place where children, parents and caregivers can share the joy of reading, books, and storytelling. Helping children develop a love of reading is an important step in helping them become successful readers. Reading with children during the summer is especially important as it helps to reduce the ‘learning loss’ that occurs when children do not have the routines of school.

Skills Required • Possess a love of reading. Read with enjoyment and enthusiasm to children. • Are comfortable with informal learning environments and settings. • Are able to travel to different parts of the city.
Benefits to Volunteer Throughout their volunteering experience, Frontier College volunteers receive ongoing professional support and training. While you are volunteering, a staff member or volunteer leader will always be available for support, and your contribution to the community will be recognized. Other benefits include: Making a difference in the lives of other people, Gaining experience and confidence in supporting others, Being a part of a supportive and impactful team, Gaining leadership skills and growing professionally and personally, Developing rewarding connections and establishing professional relationships.
